Sony puts the S in Serious

Well if there was any doubt that Sony is serious about becoming a world leader in the dSLR business, they are trying their hardest to put those doubts to rest.

While their new α (alpha) dSLR will already be able to use any of the 16 million or so Konica Minolata compatible lenses that have been sold to date, Sony have announced that they will be releasing 20 new lens models over the next year. I’m sure this will be a great relief to those who have invested heavily in the Konica Minolta system, since it seems Sony is going to make a concerted effort to become one of the major players.

Now for compete speculation. Unless these “20 new lenses” are just market speak for some rebranded Konica Minolta lenses, one has to wonder if the old lens department (assuming Sony got them) can produce this many new lenses in one year. Since Sony point and shoot cameras have Carl Zeiss lenses it’s not a stretch of the imagination to think that Zeiss will be producing at least some of these 20 lenses.

I might just be a bit jealous.
